Bull Elk with Velvet Antlers along Big Thompson River on Friday morning.

Sunday, July 10th - Photo Of The Week...

This week's photo was taken on Friday, July 8th and features a Bull Elk with Velvet Antlers. The photo was taken along Hwy 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon, about one mile east of Estes Park. The elk was one of three that were grazing on willows and other foliage along the river. Elk shed their antlers annually and during the growth process the new growth is covered in "Velvet". This velvet outer layer eventually is worn away leaving the distinctive racks area elk are known for worldwide. The elk's antlers are used for protection and also in determining dominance during mating season, which begins in September. Visitors flock to Rocky Mountain National Park during the fall months to see and listen to the elk during their mating. More information on elk viewing can be for at RMNP's site via the link provided below.
