Friday, August 5th - August 3rd Murder/Suicide In Fort Collins...   

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Larimer County Coroner’s Office have issued positive identification and manner and cause of death of the two decedents found dead at 355 Bradley Drive on August 3, 2005.

According to a press release, Larimer County Coroner/Medical Examiner determined that the manner of death for Sara Sherwood, age 30, is Homicide and that the Cause of Death is Multiple Gunshot Wounds (5) to the head and neck.

The manner of death for Steven Sherwood is Suicide and that the Cause of Death is a Contact Shotgun Wound to the head.  It is the Coroner’s finding that both individuals died within seconds of receiving their wounds.

A neighbor of the Sherwoods had reported to Larimer County Dispatch Center that he had heard gunshots at 3:48 P.M. on the afternoon of August 3, 2005.  Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was on scene at 4:02 P.M. with SWAT on scene a short time later. At approximately 8:30 P.M., the SWAT team was able to enter the residents where they found the decedents.  Investigators worked through the night examining evidence.

Steven Sherwood was a Private First Class assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 17th Field Artillery of the United States Army.  Sara Sherwood had been employed at the Hunt Club in Fort Collins.

Witnesses reported to investigators that Sara stated she had been in a relationship with another man over the past several weeks.   Witnesses further reported that when the couple’s 15 month old baby was brought to a neighbor’s residence at 1:00 P.M. that afternoon, Sara stated that she and her husband were going to discuss this and other marital issues. 

The investigation will be on-going.
