Tuesday, August 16th - West Nile Virus Season Is NOT Over...

Three positive tests from mosquito trap sites, and six infected wild birds tested by CDC, prove that West Nile Virus is still present in Larimer County.  Two possible new human cases are also being investigated.

According to Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, Director of the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, “We’re not out of the woods yet.  Everyone still needs to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, by using effective repellents on exposed skin, protective clothing, or avoiding being outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most likely to bite.”

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment reports with the recent hot weather,  the number of  Culex  mosquitoes (the primary species that transmits West Nile virus in Colorado), remains high. So far, there has been only one confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Larimer County, and a total of 15 human cases statewide.

The most effective way to prevent mosquito bites is to use an effective mosquito repellent. Detailed information about repellents and other ways to prevent West Nile Virus infection can be found at  http://www.larimer.org/health and clicking on “West Nile Information
