Monday, October 3rd -  Sheriff's Subdue Intoxicated Trespasser...

Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of South Saint Louis Avenue and Highway 402, in Loveland, at approximately 11:50 a.m. this morning.  This was in response to a citizen call regarding a suspicious person who was trespassing and “tearing up” a recreational vehicle.  It was further reported that the subject appeared to be on drugs and was bleeding profusely from his arms and torso. He had apparently cut his arms while breaking out a window and stabbed himself several times with a stick.

Upon arrival deputies discovered an uncooperative, white male, 6 foot tall and approximately 200 pounds, later identified as Timothy Glenn Mathis, 35 years of age.  His right side was covered in what appeared to be blood.  He  was throwing rocks and boards around while threatening the deputies with a large rock. The subject refused all verbal commands and became combative.

The deputies believed the male subject was intoxicated and/or under the influence of stimulant narcotics.  Deputies deployed a Taser, they are designed to deliver an incapacitating electrical current.  The Taser seemingly had no effect.  The subject was eventually brought to the ground by the use of baton and physical control techniques.  Upon being subdued he went into cardiac arrest and was administered CPR by the deputies.  His pulse and breathing had been restored by the time the ambulance arrived.   He was transported to McKee Medical Center in Loveland.  His condition is unknown to us, at this time.

Mr. Mathis has a lengthy criminal history in Larimer County including drugs and assaults.   He is out on bond stemming from charges of controlled substance distribution, driving after revocation, violation of restraining order and assault.   He is under investigation for charges of criminal trespassing, felony menacing, and second degree assault.

Due to the strength and agility he displayed while fighting the deputies and his resistance to pain compliance techniques, it is possible the Mr. Mathis was in a state of “excited delirium syndrome”.  This is a psychological/ physiological condition that can be caused by consuming large quantities of stimulant narcotics.  In this ‘state’ an individual can possess unusual strength and pain insensitivity. They do require prompt medical attention, as it can result in spontaneous cardio/pulmonary arrest.

Three Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies were involved.  One of the deputies was off duty, heard the message from dispatch and went to the scene to provide back-up for his fellow officers.  They received minor injuries that are being treated.
