Elk on shore of Lake Estes

Elk on shore of Lake Estes

Sunday, November 20th - Photo Of The Week...

This week's photo features a herd of elk along the shore of Lake Estes. This herd was over 100 head strong and covered a large area along the southern shores of the lake. The "Needles" of "Lumpy Ridge", and Black Canyon, provided the beautiful background for this photograph.

Area Elk are still in their mating rut and very temperamental. Bulls can become aggressive and charge with amazing speed when they feel they are being threatened or challenged. It is strongly advised to used extreme caution when viewing or photographing the Elk at this time of year.

A tourist visiting Estes Park recently found this out first hand after trying to photograph a bull elk. The elk charged both him and his vehicle, inflicting heavy damage to both the interior and exterior of the car. The man was fortunately uninjured.
