Chimney Fire In Canyon...

An apparent chimney fire caused heavy damage to a home in the Big Thompson Canyon on Saturday evening. At approximately 4:30pm, Larimer County Rural Fire Protection responded to reports of a structure fire at 1523 Highway 34 in Drake. Crews quickly worked to extinguish the blaze and secure the scene.

As cooler weather moves into our area for the winter season, more and more people are using fireplaces and wood stoves for heat. Along with this comes an increase in the number of chimney fires.

Chimney fires are usually due to poor maintenance resulting in a buildup of soot and creosote in the flue of the chimney. This buildup can then be ignited by flames and heat from fires burning below leading to a chimney fire.

These types of fires are 99% preventable through proper cleaning and maintenance. It is recommended that individuals have their chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned on a regular basis buy a licensed chimneysweep. With proper care fireplaces provide a safe, economical source of heat and add aesthetic value to any home.
