This week's photo of the week, taken last Thursday morning, features
a beautiful winter view of Mount Chapin in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Mount Chapin, which rises to 12,454
feet, is one of the better known peaks in the Mummy Range. It is an
easy climb in the summer and its summit is visited by many tourists to
the Park. Access to the mountain in the winter
months is very limited due to road closures preventing reaching the
trailhead by car.
The trailhead lies 6.5 miles up Old
Fall River Road, which traditionally opens on the Fourth of July
each year, and closes with the first snows of fall, usually in late
October or early November.
The spectacular drive up Old Fall River
Road is a must do for any summer visitor to Rocky Mountain National
Park. The one-way dirt road begins in Endo Valley at the west end of
Horseshoe Park, and winds 9 miles up to the Alpine
Visitor Center, situated at 11,796 feet above sea level. Along the
way you will see many breath-taking vistas and spectacular views of
Mount Chapin, the
Mummy Range and the valley below.

Supernova - Be Yourself (First
Performance with Complete Band)
The skies were
brightly lit early this morning by the light of
the Full Snow Moon setting over the snow covered
hillsides across the area.
Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month,
native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the
Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon,
since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.
The Full Moon officially occurred at 10:45PM MST on
Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a Snow
& Blowing Snow Advisory for the front range foothills, including the Drake,
Glen Haven and Storm Mountain areas, in effect from 4PM MST this afternoon
through 9AM MST on Friday.
SNOW SHOWERS WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AND BECOME A MORE
WIDESPREAD AND GENERAL SNOW BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND THEN CONTINUE INTO
TONIGHT. WINDS WILL INCREASE FROM NORTHEAST AT 10 TO 20 MPH PRODUCING SOME
AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING BELOW ZERO TONIGHT. THE SNOW
WILL DIMINISH FROM NORTH TO SOUTH BEGINNING NEAR THE WYOMING BORDER BY AROUND
MIDNIGHT BUT LINGERING IN THE SOUTHERN PORTIONS INTO FRIDAY MORNING.
A SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT VISIBILITIES
WILL BE LIMITED DUE TO A COMBINATION OF FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW. USE CAUTION
WHEN TRAVELING, ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS.
