July 1st - Photo
Of The Week...
This week's photo features a magnificent carving of a bear family carved into a large Cottonwood Tree stump along
the south side of Highway 34 in the Big Thompson
Canyon, just west of the Cherry Cider store. This wonderful piece of artwork is the creation of Loveland, Colorado artist Faye
Braaten, also known as Chainsaw Mama.
Braaten is well known in the area for her outstanding work in carving wood sculpture using an array of various chainsaws. In the spring of 1999 the opportunity arose for Faye to learn how to carve with a chainsaw. Encouraged by her husband, Faye learned the basics from a friend in Cook City, Montana. The rest of her carving skills developed naturally as an extension of her artistic and athletic abilities.
During Faye's first year of carving she was invited to the "Whittle The Wood" carving contest in Craig, Colorado. She won 2nd place competing against men with 15 to 20 years experience from the Rocky Mountain Region and from around the world. Since then she has been commissioned to do many larger pieces: a cowboy and cowgirl for the Black Steer Restaurant, a 6 ft. moose for a retail store, a baby in the hand of God as a memorial, and more. She placed third in another contest and has been featured in several newspapers.
Braaten recently took the 1st Place People's Choice Award at Whittle The
Wood 2007. Faye gives credit for her success to the Lord.
Faye Braaten sculpts original chainsaw carvings, creates custom pieces, and also does house calls to change your beloved tree into a work of art. She specializes in bears, eagles, and wolves; but has done a wide verity of subjects and is always open to new challenges.
For more information about Faye's work or to set up a transformation of one of you trees you can visit www.chainsawmam.com or call Faye Braaten at 970-278-0128.
