Did you know computers contain hazardous materials, such as lead, zinc, nickel and cadmium? Throwing old computer equipment in the trash will result in these hazardous materials leaking into the environment when dumped in the landfill. So what should you do with them? The Larimer County Recycling Center is one of many places in the area that you can drop off computers - as well as televisions, stereos, VCRs, and cell phones - for recycling. Recycle America Alliance, the operator of the recycling center, began recycling electronics in May 2005. Items may be dropped off at the scalehouse (see map) Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the 3rd Saturday of every month (starting June 18) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Fees are charged to help with the high costs associated with recycling electronics. Click here for current fees. Only cash is accepted. For more information about this program, call (970) 226-1101. Businesses may be able to arrange for pickup service. Several other businesses and organizations in northeast Colorado may accept old computer equipment to be either reused or recycled. The City of Fort Collins has put together a list of these places for you. |
