Tuesday, July 12th - Minnow Giveaway For Mosquito Control...

The City of Loveland’s mosquito control program will be offering free minnows for use in private ponds to help minimize West Nile Virus problems.  The minnows, which consume mosquito larvae before they mature and become airborne, will be available from a booth in the Wal-mart Supercenter parking lot, 1325 N. Denver Ave. , 9a.m.-3p.m. , Saturday, July 16.

Property owners who have ponds or other completely-contained wet areas are invited to bring a wide-mouthed gallon container to accept the fish.  The free fish are fathead minnows, a native Colorado species.

A technician from Colorado Mosquito Control, Inc., the company employed by the City of Loveland for more than 20 years for local mosquito control, will be on hand to answer questions.  Also available at the booth will be information on West Nile Virus, insect repellent information and refrigerator magnets with the company’s phone number to advise them of areas of standing water that may need treatment..

The minnow giveaway is part of Loveland ’s continuing efforts toward mosquito control and public awareness.  Due to limited supplies, each household is limited to enough fish for up to approximately 900 sq. ft. of pond surface.

Mike Doyle, an entomologist with Colorado Mosquito Control, noted that “We have killed over 1.1 billion mosquito larvae so far this year in the lakes, ponds, and agricultural areas in and around Loveland , but we need the public’s help right in our own backyards.  Please call us at 962-2583 if you know of standing water in your neighborhood.”
