Friday, August 19th - Sheriffs Involved In Fatal Shooting...

On August 18, 2005 at 4:40 PM, Larimer County Sheriff's Office received a report of a felony menacing that had just occurred at 6855 W. Highway 14, also known as the Poudre Canyon Highway, approximately six miles west of Ted's Place.  The complainant, Jeffrey Laverne McChesney, DOB 03/25/62, reported that he, McChesney, asked the suspect to move his truck which was blocking access to some property located behind that address.  McChesney reported that the suspect began yelling at him, then went back into the residence and emerged with a shotgun that he pointed at McChesney and McChesney's juvenile son.  McChesney was able to identify the suspect by name.

Two deputies and a reserve deputy met McChesney at Ted's Place to take the report.  They then went to that address, arriving at 6:27 PM.  The location is approximately three and a half miles south of the Highway on a rough, narrow 4-wheel drive road.  Deputies drove up the road approximately three miles then walked the last half mile.

The suspect came out on the porch and exchanged words with the deputies.  The suspect then went inside the residence, and came out again with a shotgun.  The suspect racked a round into the chamber of the shotgun and fired one round at the reserve deputy. The round struck the suspect's truck behind which the reserve had taken cover.  At approximately 6:36, deputies returned fire, striking the suspect once. Medical units from Poudre Valley Hospital responded to the scene and declared the suspect deceased.

Records indicate a similar complaint was made by Don Weixelman on June 13, 2005.  At that time, it was reported that on the day prior, the suspect had blocked Gary Weixelman from some property Weixelmans owned located behind that address.  At that time, the suspect was reportedly wearing a gun but had not pointed it at anyone.  No charges were filed in that case.

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and Larimer County Coroner's Office hope to remove the decedent from that location later this evening.  The name of the deceased and the cause and manner of death will be released by the coroner. The area will be sealed off until morning at which time investigators will begin processing the scene.
